What we fix on the shoulder and what needs a tow
Most I-80 calls do not need a shop. Here is what we handle where you sit.
| What’s wrong | What we do on scene |
|---|---|
| Blown steer, drive, or trailer tire | Casing brought to your exit, mounted, torqued to spec, documented → Tire Replacement |
| Air leak, dropping pressure, brakes dragging | Line and chamber repair, slack adjuster work |
| Truck won’t crank or won’t charge | Starter, alternator, battery, jump start |
| Out of fuel or DEF | Delivery to your exit, prime and bleed → Fuel Delivery |
| Overheating, blown hose, coolant loss | Hose repair and top-off, or tow if the block is at risk |
| Derate or dash fault | Diagnostic on scene, repair if the part is on the truck |
| Off the road, in the median, jackknifed | Rigged and winched out properly → Winch-Out |
| Accident, rollover, load shift | Heavy recovery with PSP and PennDOT coordination |
| Cracked frame, seized engine, no-start after diagnosis | Class 7/8 tow to your shop → Heavy Duty Towing |
We tell you which one it is before we quote it. A Class 8 tow off the Poconos is expensive. If it can be fixed on the shoulder, we fix it on the shoulder.
Brakes, and the eastbound run down the Poconos
I-80 eastbound descends off the Pocono plateau toward the Delaware Water Gap. Loaded units come down that grade hot, and heat is what turns a marginal brake into a failed one.
If you pull over on that descent with smoking drums, a dragging brake, or an air system that will not build, do not try to finish the run. Call us where you are.
Under CVSA out-of-service criteria, a commercial vehicle is placed out of service when 20% or more of its service brakes are defective, and steer axle brake defects are treated more strictly still. If an inspector finds you before we do, you are not driving that unit anywhere.
We do roadside air brake work line repair, chamber replacement, slack adjuster adjustment so a brake problem does not automatically become a tow.
Construction between Exit 298 and Exit 308
PennDOT is widening I-80 to three lanes in each direction between Exit 298 and Exit 308, with all interchanges in that stretch being rebuilt. For you that means narrowed lanes, reduced shoulder width, and shifting traffic patterns through the Stroudsburg area. If you break down inside the work zone, say so on the call. Recovery is rigged differently when there is no shoulder to work from, and we send the right truck the first time instead of the second.
Who is behind the truck
Richardson Roadside Assistance is owner-operated by Daniel J Richardson out of 1516 W Gibson St, Scranton, PA 18504. The business grew out of commercial truck work, which is why roughly four out of five calls involve a semi, box truck or piece of equipment rather than a passenger car. Cars are welcome they are simply the smaller share of the day.
Practically, owner-operated means the person who quotes the job is accountable for it. There is no call-center layer between you and the driver, no lead broker reselling your breakdown to whoever bids lowest, and no scope of work that changes after the vehicle is already loaded. Fleet managers get straight answers on ETA and price; individual drivers get told when they do not need a tow at all.

This company was hired through our RV warranty Ford to pick up our motorhome on Saturday. It's now Tuesday they have our key. We were ghosted five times before being told that they did not have the equipment to handle the job. This company is very unprofessional on so many levels! Use at your own risk!Posted on Google![]()

Questions drivers ask before they call
What part of I-80 do you cover?
Exit 274 near White Haven east to Exit 310 at the Delaware Water Gap. We do not service I-80 west of Exit 274 or across the river in New Jersey.
How fast can you get to me?
[INSERT REAL ETA RANGES]. Exit 293 is our closest point on I-80. We give you an honest window on the call — if we are not the fastest option for you, we say so.
Can you fix air brakes on the roadside?
Yes. Air line repair, chamber replacement, and slack adjuster adjustment are done on scene. If the failure is beyond a roadside fix, we tow.
Can you replace a semi truck tire on I-80?
Yes. We bring the casing to your exit, mount it, torque it to specification, and document the work. Steer, drive, and trailer positions.
Do I need a tow or can you fix it here?
We diagnose first and tell you straight. Tires, air leaks, starters, alternators, hoses, fuel, and DEF are usually handled on the shoulder, which is far cheaper than a heavy-duty tow.
Are you open overnight and in bad weather?
Yes. 24/7, including nights, weekends, holidays, and winter storms — which is when most of our Pocono calls come in.
How do I pay?
Direct pay, or fleet billing via net-30, ComData, EFS, or T-Chek. Confirmed on the call, before dispatch.
Down on I-80 right now?
Call (570) 309-2516. Give us your exit and direction. We dispatch 24/7 across the Pocono stretch of I-80.
