I-84 Truck Repair & Heavy-Duty Towing Pennsylvania

Richardson Roadside Assistance provides 24/7 mobile truck repair, on-site tire replacement, and heavy-duty towing on Interstate 84 in Pennsylvania, from the I-81 interchange in Dunmore east through Wayne and Pike counties. I-84 runs 54.87 miles across Pennsylvania and passes through some of the most thinly serviced country in the state there are no major settlements along it and long stretches with no exits at all.

If you are down on I-84, the nearest heavy-duty capability is almost certainly behind you in Scranton. That is where we dispatch from.

Why breaking down on I-84 is different

I-84 is not a busy urban interstate with a service plaza every ten miles. It is the opposite.

There are no major towns on or near I-84 in Pennsylvania. After the Dunmore interchange it runs almost due east through heavily wooded country in Wayne and Pike counties, with a wide median and long gaps between interchanges. Between Exit 34 at Lords Valley and Exit 46 near Milford there is roughly a twelve-mile stretch with no interchange at all.

That has three practical consequences for a driver:

1. Nobody is coming to help you locally. Wayne and Pike counties have almost no heavy-duty truck service infrastructure. If you go down at Exit 26 with a blown steer tire, your realistic options are Scranton to the west or Port Jervis, New York to the east. There is no third option.

2. You may not have a usable signal. Cell coverage through the wooded sections is inconsistent. If you get one call out, make it count have your exit number and direction ready before you dial.

3. You are past the decision point. I-81 north to I-84 east at Dunmore is the standard long-haul truck route around New York City toward New England. Once you are on I-84 eastbound, you have committed to that bypass. Turning around to reach heavy service in Scranton is a long, expensive backtrack which is exactly why a mobile repair that gets you rolling again is worth more here than anywhere else in our service area.

I-84 exit-by-exit coverage

Give the dispatcher an exit number and a direction. Exit numbers below are current PennDOT milepost-based numbering (renumbered in 2001 if you are working from an older atlas with single-digit exits, the new numbers are different).

These two exits sit at the outer edge of our range roughly 50 to 58 road miles from our Scranton base. We do run out there, but the response window is longer. Call us and we will give you an honest arrival time. If someone across the river in Port Jervis can reach you faster, we will say so.

What actually goes wrong on I-84

Different road, different failures. This is what we get called for out here.

Steer and drive tire failures with no shoulder help. A blowout at Exit 20 means you sit until someone brings a casing to you. There is no tire shop at the next exit, because there is often nothing at the next exit.

Deer strikes. Southern Wayne County is dense woodland and swamp on both sides of a wide median. Deer strikes on I-84 are common, especially at dawn, dusk, and through the autumn rut. A strike at highway speed takes out bumpers, steps, air lines, and radiators and a punctured radiator turns into a tow if it is not caught fast.

Grade-related overheating and brake issues. I-84 climbs from Dunmore onto the Pocono plateau Mount Cobb sits at roughly 1,655 feet. Loaded units pulling that climb in summer heat overheat; the same units riding the descent westbound cook their brakes.

Winter, hard. Pike and Wayne counties get significant lake-effect and upslope snow. Air line freeze-ups, gelled fuel, gelled DEF, dead batteries, and slide-offs into a wide, soft median are the December-through-March pattern out here.

Out of fuel or DEF. Easy to misjudge when there is nothing between exits. A driver who plans to fuel at Milford and gets caught at Exit 26 has a 20-mile problem.

What we bring to you on I-84

Mobile truck repair

Air leaks, failed starters and alternators, coolant hoses, slack adjusters, sensor faults triggering a derate, minor collision damage after a deer strike. Out here, fixing it on the shoulder is not just cheaper than a tow it is often 60+ miles cheaper.

Semi-truck tire replacement

We bring the casing to your exit, dismount, replace the valve stem, mount, and torque to spec with a calibrated wrench. Steer, drive, and trailer positions in common commercial sizes. → Semi-Truck Tire Replacement

Diesel and DEF delivery

Enough fuel or DEF to get you to the next real station under your own power, with priming and bleeding if the system ran dry. → Semi-Truck Fuel Delivery

Heavy-duty towing and recovery

Class 7 and Class 8 wrecker service for tractors, loaded trailers, and combination units — including tows back west to Scranton-area shops when a roadside fix is not realistic. → Heavy Duty Towing.

Winch-out and median recovery

I-84 has a wide, soft median and long unguarded shoulders. Units that leave the roadway here tend to go further off than they would on a narrower highway, and they need to be rigged properly to come out without further damage. → Winch-Out Service

RV and motorhome service

I-84 carries heavy seasonal traffic to Lake Wallenpaupack, Promised Land State Park, and the Poconos. We service and tow Class A and Class C motorhomes and large travel trailers units most light-duty operators cannot handle.

Stranded on a rural stretch what to do first

Federal rules on hazard lights and warning device placement apply here exactly as they do everywhere. If you need the specific distances.

What is different on I-84 is the isolation. Three things matter most out here:

  1. Fix your position before your signal drops. Note the exit you last passed and your direction of travel. If you have signal, drop a pin and text it. If you lose signal mid-call, we still have a starting point.
  2. Get fully off the pavement if you can. I-84’s shoulders are generally wide. Use them. But watch the drop-off soft ground at the shoulder edge is how a breakdown becomes a winch-out.
  3. Do not walk to the next exit. It may be twelve miles away with nothing at the end of it, along an unlit road through wooded country. Stay with the unit.

This company was hired through our RV warranty Ford to pick up our motorhome on Saturday. It's now Tuesday they have our key. We were ghosted five times before being told that they did not have the equipment to handle the job. This company is very unprofessional on so many levels! Use at your own risk!

I-84 frequently asked questions

What part of I-84 do you cover in Pennsylvania?

We provide full coverage from Exit 1 in Dunmore east to Exit 34 at Lords Valley. Exits 46 (Milford) and 53 (Matamoras) are within our extended range with a longer response window. We do not service I-84 in New York State.

How long is I-84 in Pennsylvania?

Interstate 84 runs 54.87 miles in Pennsylvania, from the I-81 interchange in Dunmore east to the New York state line at Matamoras, passing through Lackawanna, Wayne, and Pike counties.

Are there truck services along I-84 in Pennsylvania?

Very few. There are no major settlements along the Pennsylvania section of I-84 and long gaps between interchanges. For heavy-duty truck repair, most of the corridor is served from Scranton to the west or Port Jervis, New York to the east.

Can you replace a semi truck tire on I-84?

Yes. We carry commercial steer, drive, and trailer casings and mount them on-site at your exit. This is our most common I-84 call, because there is nowhere along the corridor to limp to.

Do you tow RVs and motorhomes on I-84?

Yes. I-84 carries heavy seasonal traffic toward Lake Wallenpaupack and Promised Land State Park. We handle Class A and Class C motorhomes and large travel trailers.

How fast can you reach me on I-84?

Response depends on your exit. [INSERT REAL ETA RANGES]. Exits 46 and 53 take longer. We give you an honest arrival window on the call rather than an optimistic one.

Why are the exit numbers different from my old atlas?

Pennsylvania renumbered I-84's exits to milepost-based numbering in 2001. What was Exit 4 is now Exit 8; what was Exit 5 is now Exit 17. Always give us the number posted on the sign you just passed.

Do you cover the I-380 split at Exit 4?

Yes. I-84 and I-380 run concurrently for about four miles out of Dunmore before splitting at Exit 4. That interchange is inside our core zone, and we cover I-380 separately.

Do you service I-84 across the river in New York?

No. Our coverage ends at the Pennsylvania state line in Matamoras. Across the Delaware River in Port Jervis you are in New York and better served by an operator based there.

How do I pay?

Direct pay, or fleet billing via net-30 account, ComData, EFS, or T-Chek. Payment method is confirmed on the call, before dispatch.

Down on I-84 right now?

Call (570) 309-2516. Exit number and direction of travel is all we need to start. Richardson Roadside Assistance dispatches 24/7 from Scranton across I-84 in Lackawanna, Wayne, and Pike counties.
